Ram handling

Rams are large, strong animals. Each year people are hurt trying to handle rams, either by accidental contact with head, horns or body or due to falling or stumbling while handling.

Tranquilisers

Tranquilisers can be used to sedate rams prior to shearing or other handling procedures. These are prescription drugs that by law can only be obtained from a veterinarian. The correct dose, administration and withholding periods must be observed.

Horn trimming

Rams with long horns are more likely to injure handlers or get caught in fences or trees. For details refer to the Meat & Livestock Australia’s ‘Producers guide to sheep husbandry practices’.
