Ram joining percentages

As a general rule, healthy sound Merino and British breed rams can be used at a rate of 1 ram: 100 ewes. This ratio can be modified to suit different conditions. For example, in very large paddocks with multiple watering points, more rams are required due to larger distances to be walked.

Ewe lambs 1:60 – as hogget ewes have shorter and weaker oestrus
Merino 2 year-old ewes 1:80
General joining percentage 1:100

Joining

Please note that the expected maiden ewe in-lamb rate will be 60-80% below the mob average.

Age of rams at joining

Rams should not be used until they are approximately 70% of their adult body weight. Hogget rams are not suitable for use with maiden ewes as the shorter oestrus of young ewes means they will perform better with experienced rams.
