COST OF PARASITES

The cost of parasites for Australian beef producers:

Cost of parasites

A recent MLA report ranked Cattle tick, Buffalo fly, and internal parasites, among the 17 most economically damaging diseases and conditions of cattle in Australia1.  In fact, those parasitic problems actually ranked in the top 6 of the list!

Cost of parasites

The annual cost of internal parasites in cattle is estimated at $93.6 million1. The same report also estimated that cattle tick and lice incur an annual cost to the cattle industry of $173 million and $81 million, respectively.

Most of this cost is due to lost production, particularly where the damage does not cause obvious disease (subclinical).
