Expand All
  • Description:

      • Equivac S is used in the control of strangles due to Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in horses.
      • Equivac S is one of a range of Equivac products available for tetanus and strangles treatment and control.

        Pack sizes:

          • 20 x 1 mL syringes.

          SDS

            • Equivac S provides a means of vaccinating for strangles alone, where simultaneous vaccination for tetanus is not required, for example:
              1. During the primary vaccination program, the first dose may be Equivac 2 in 1, the second dose may be Equivac S and the third dose may be Equivac 2 in 1, where the interval between each dose is not less than 2 weeks.
              2. In an optimal vaccination booster program for strangles involving boosters given every 6 months, Equivac 2 in 1 could be administered annually with Equivac S being administered mid-way between annual Equivac 2 in 1 doses.
          • Dosage:

              • See product leaflet for full instructions.
              • 1 mL injected intra-muscularly.
              • For primary immunisation of horses against strangles, horses 3 months of age or older should be given 3 doses of vaccine at intervals no less than 2 weeks apart. For ongoing immunisation, booster doses should be given annually, or every 6 months for horses at higher risk of exposure. Equivac® 2 in 1 may be used for strangles vaccination where tetanus inclusion is also required.
              • The product leaflet should be consulted for guidance as to the use of strangles vaccine in the event of an outbreak.
              • It is recommended that strangles vaccination be a component of a herd-health biosecurity-focussed management program for the prevention and control of strangles in horses.

                      Side Effects

Occasional reports of local reactions to vaccination have been received. On rare occasions systemic signs have been observed. This appear to occur when horses have been sensitised to Strepococcus equi by exposure to infection or when they are incubating the disease. Horses which show an abnormally severe reaction following vaccination should not receive further doses of vaccine for 12 months. Local reactions are more evident if the vaccine is injected subcutaneously. Provided the injection has been carried out aseptically, any swelling which occurs at the site of inoculation should disappear in a few days.
