Solu-delta-cortef®

Expand All
  • Situations requiring a rapid and intense adrenal glucocorticoid and/or anti-inflammatory effect.

  • For treatment of anaphylactoid reactions, shock, inflammatory conditions and overwhelming infections with severe toxicity.

  • Solu-Delta-Cortef® (prednisolone sodium succinate) solution should be the first choice when potent anti- inflammatory effects are required, with an anti-inflammatory activity of prednisolone at least 5 times that of cortisone.

Solu-Delta-Cortef® is water-soluble for maximum speed and effectiveness.

Useful in alleviating lameness from arthritic conditions. Treats bursitis, carpitis, tendinitis and myositis.

Especially beneficial in treating acute hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis resulting from treatment with a sensitizing drug or from exposure to allergic agents.

As supportive therapy, Solu-Delta-Cortef® combats stress conditions, and permits antibacterial agents to exert their full effect in moribund animals by counteracting the responsible inflammatory changes.

Also helpful as supportive therapy in the treatment of stress-induced exhaustion, snakebite antivenom reaction, toxaemia, inflammatory ocular conditions and other stress conditions.

  • Intramuscular dose:

In inflammatory, allergic and less severe stress conditions where an immediate effect is not required, the dose is usually 1-5 mg. This can be increased to 30-50 mg in large breeds of dogs. Treatment can be repeated in 12-24 hours and continued for 3-5 days, if necessary.

    Intravenous dose:

For shock and shocklike states, the intravenous dose ranges from 5.5 – 11 mg/kg bodyweight as the initial treatment. Follow with equal maintenance doses at intervals of 1, 3, 6 or 10 hours as determined by the condition of the animal.

  • Packaging

Prepared solutions are stable for 3 days at room temperature or 8 days if refrigerated.

As with other cortiocosteroids, this product is contraindicated, except when used as emergency therapy, in animals with tuberculosis, hyperadrenocorticism and peptic ulcers. Use may induce parturition when administered during the last trimester of pregnancy, and may be associated with other birth-related complications

Suppression of inflammation may mask the signs of infection. Patients should be monitored for evidence of concurrent infection. In infections characterised by overwhelming toxicity, Solu-delta-cortef® therapy in conjunction with indicated antibacterial therapy is effective in reducing mortality and morbidity.

Law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. (S4)
