Equivac TAT

  • Description:

    • Equivac TAT is used in the treatment and prevention of tetanus due to Clostridium tetani.
    • Equivac TAT is one of a range of Equivac products available for tetanus treatment and control.
    • Equivac TAT is not a vaccine. It is a purified concentrated hyperimmune antiserum containing antibodies to tetanus toxin.
    • Equivac TAT is approved for use in horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and dogs.

    Pack sizes:

    • 20 x 1 mL syringes.

    • Equivac TAT provides a means of immediate protection against tetanus where the animal is not vaccinated.
    • Combined Active-Passive Protection: Equivac T or Equivac® 2in1 can be administered simultaneously with Equivac TAT. A separate needle and syringe should be used for each product and administration should be on opposite sides of the body. If initiating a primary course the second dose of Equivac T or Equivac 2in1 should be administered 4 to 6 weeks later.

     

  • Dosage:

    • See product leaflet for full instructions.
    • Prevention of tetanus:
      • Horses and foals and adult cattle: not less than 1 mL (1500 iu) injected subcutaneously (s/c). Calves, sheep, goats and pigs: not less than 500 iu s/c.
      • Dogs: not less than 250 iu s/c.
      • Lambs and piglets: not less than 100 iu s/c.
    • Treatment of clinically diagnosed tetanus: 10000-20000 u injected slowly intravenously. Antitoxin as a treatment is less successful than as a prevention. Equivac TAT as a treatment is best given early in the disease.
    • Withholding periods for food producing species: zero (0) days.
    • For horses, Equivac TAT should remain at a preventative level in the plasma for 2-3 weeks.

    Storage:

    Store between 2°C and 8°C. (Refrigerate. Do not freeze). Protect from light.

    Side Effects

    Allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis occur rarely with biological products and may require appropriate treatment. Transient soft tissue swelling associated with the site of injection of this product has been reported on rare occasions.
