Disease Prevention For Cows

Zoetis provides a diverse range of products to help prevent disease in cows. We also work with cattle farmers and vets to help them make informed decisions that contribute to improve the health of their herd.

Cattle Vaccine Storage and Handling

Silirum® for bovine Johne’s disease

Silirum vaccine is a vet only product that can aid in the control of Bovine Johne’s Disease (BJD). In herds where a diagnosis of BJD has been confirmed or as part of a whole farm biosecurity plan to reduce the risk of infection entering the herd, it is recommended that all replacement calves are vaccinated at 3-6 weeks of age.

The following vaccination protocol is suggested for Australian dairy herds:

Protocol for Lactating Cows, Heifers, Dry Cows and Bulls using Ultravac Botulinum
Initial Course Ultravac Botulinum Two doses given 4-6 weeks apart, with the second dose at least 1 month before starting to feed silage or other conserved feeds
Annual Boosters Ultravac Botulinum A single dose at least 1 month before starting to feed silage or other conserved feeds

Alternative Protocol using Longrange Botulinum as the First Dose
Initial Course Longrange Botulinum* A single dose at 28 days before starting to feed silage or other conserved feeds
Annual Boosters Ultravac Botulinum A single dose at least 1 month before starting to feed silage or other conserved feeds
*When used in lactating dairy cattle, Longrange Botulinum Vaccine may be associated with a temporary drop in milk production for 1-2 days post-vaccination.

Longrange® Botulinum Vaccine is a convenient single dose vaccine and Ultravac® Botulinum Vaccine is a traditional two-dose vaccine. Longrange providesup to 50 times the necessary level of protection against type C and D botulism and this immunity persists at protective levels for 12 months after administration

Ultravac Scourshield® Vaccine

Calf scours is one of the most stressful and costly disease syndromes for vets and farmers to deal with.

Ultravac Scourshield® vaccine may be used for the vaccination of healthy pregnant cows and heifers as an aid in preventing diarrhoea in their calves caused by certain bacteria and viruses.

The primary vaccination should consist of two doses at least 3–9 weeks apart to pregnant cows, with the second dose given 2–6 weeks prior to calving.

weeks from calving

Annual boosters with a single dose should be administered 2–6 weeks before each subsequent calving.
